Shutting out the White Sox for the third straight time this season, Tommy John breezed to an 8-0 victory as the Yankees backed their lefthander with an 18-hit attack. Rick Cerone and Bucky Dent each went 4-for-5.

The Yankees, after leading only 1-0, broke the game apart with seven runs in the ninth inning including a bases-loaded triple by Willie Randolph. John's shutout was his third in a row and fifth of the year. [The Sporting News]
