The Phillies moved ahead of the Expos into first place in the East Division when a single by Bob Boone scored Garry Maddox with one out in the ninth inning and produced a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Maddox and Manny Trillo led off with singles and Larry Bowa sacrificed. With first base open, the Pirates decided to pitch to Boone, rather than pass him intentionally to load the bases.
