The Expos regained first place in the division over the Phillies by shading the Cubs, 2-1. Gary Carter drilled a homer in the fourth inning to give the Expos a 1-0 lead, but the Cubs tied the game in the sixth on a triple by Doug Capilla and single by Jesus Figueroa.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ron LeFlore walked, took second on an infield out, moved to third on a single by Andre Dawson and scored the deciding run as Carter grounded out to second. [The Sporting News]
