Lee Mazzilli went 6-for-8 with two homers and drove in six runs to pace the Mets to a 7-4, 10-4 doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals. Mazzilli's second round-tripper of the first game came in the eighth inning with two mates aboard and boosted the Mets into a 4-3 lead after they had fallen behind, 3-1, in the top of frame on a two-run homer by George Hendrick. Later in the stanza, the Mets added three more tallies on a single by Frank Taveras, two walks, a single by Joel Youngblood and two-run error by Cardinals shortstop Garry Templeton.

In the second game, Mark Bomback pitched a seven-hitter to record his second route-going effort of the campaign. At one stage he retired 15 consecutive batters. Four different Mets delivered RBI singles in a five-run second inning. The Mets took advantage of sloppy Cardinals fielding to score one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
