Posting his 15th victory, Steve Carlton scattered seven hits in pitching the Phillies to a 2-1 triumph over the Astros. The ace lefty lost his shutout on a single by Luis Pujols and triple by Rafael Landestoy with two out in the ninth inning.

The Phils scored their first run in the fourth when Bake McBride singled, stole second and came home on two wild pitches. The deciding run followed in the sixth when McBride stroked a leadoff single, stole second, moved to third on a single by Garry Maddox and scored on Bob Boone's grounder to shortstop.
