Replacing Juan Eichelberger, who underwent an emergency appendectomy, Bob Shirley made his first start of the season for the Padres and combined with Rollie Fingers to beat the Cubs, 2-1. Dave Cash hit his first homer of the year to start the Padres' scoring in the fifth inning.
