After the Dodgers won the first game of a doubleheader, 4-2, the Pirates came back to capture the second contest, 8-7. In the opener, a homer by Steve Yeager snapped a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning and Dusty Baker tripled home an insurance run in the eighth.

The Pirates trailed, 7-6, going into the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap but loaded the bases on a walk to Phil Garner, infield hit by Lee Lacy, sacrifice by Bill Robinson and intentional walk to Bill Madlock. Steve Howe then relieved Bobby Castillo on the hill for the Dodgers and passed John Milner to force home the tying run. Ed Ott followed with a single to plate the game-winning marker.
