A throwing error by third baseman Carney Lansford with two out in the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score and gave the Tigers a 7-6 victory over the Angels. Al Cowens opened the inning with a single and, two outs later, reached third on a single by Richie Hebner.

Pinch-hitter Champ Summers then hit a grounder to Lansford, who tried to force Hebner at second but threw the ball into right field, allowing Cowens to tally the winning run. The Angels had tied the game in the seventh on a solo homer by Jason Thompson, who also clouted a two-run shot in the first. [The Sporting News]
