Scattering seven hits, Larry Gura pitched the Royals to an 8-0 whitewashing of the Yankees. The K. C. southpaw raised his record to 14-4 with his 13th complete game and fourth shutout as he lowered his league-leading ERA to 2.01.

The Royals got RBI singles in the first and second innings from Hal McRae and Dave Chalk and chased starter Tommy John with a six-run assault in the fourth as U.L.
