A three-run outburst in the fourth inning propelled the Padres to a 5-2 triumph over the Cardinals. The Padres trailed, 1-0, when Gene Richards opened the bottom of the fourth with a triple. A single by Ozzie Smith then plated Richards and a double by Jerry Mumphrey chased Smith home.

A single by Jerry Turner registered Mumphrey with the third marker of the frame. Gary Lucas, with relief aid from Rollie Fingers, snapped his personal four-game losing skein in getting credit for the victory. [The Sporting News]
