An error by Boston shortstop Rick Burleson in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score as the Royals outlasted the Red Sox, 9-8. After the Sox tied the contest at 8-8 in the top of the ninth on an RBI pinch-single by Jim Dwyer, George Brett began the bottom of the frame with a double.

After Hal McRae was intentionally walked, John Wathan bounced into a double play. Amos Otis then grounded to Burleson, who booted the ball as Brett came home. Brett had four hits, including a seventh-inning homer, and raised his average to .382. [The Sporting News]
