An error by Boston shortstop Rick Burleson in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score as the Royals outlasted the Red Sox, 9-8. After the Sox tied the contest at 8-8 in the top of the ninth on an RBI pinch-single by Jim Dwyer, George Brett began the bottom of the frame with a double.
