A three-run homer by Reggie Jackson with two out in the ninth inning sent the game into extra innings and the Yankees then scored a run in the 11th to edge the Brewers, 7-6. A mental lapse by Brewers catcher Charlie Moore enabled the Yankees to register the winning run.

After the Yanks loaded the bases, Eric Soderholm hit a grounder to Jim Gantner at third, who stepped on the bag for a forceout and then threw home. Moore, however, forgot the force was off and tagged the plate instead of the runner. [The Sporting News]
