The pitcher's hit scored Jesus Figueroa, who had doubled, and Lenny Randle, who had walked. The Cubs then added the deciding run in the fourth on an RBI single by Ivan DeJesus.

The Cubs trailed, 2-1, in the seventh inning of the nightcap when Cliff Johnson singled and Bill Buckner doubled to put runners on second and third. After Greg Minton replaced Bob Knepper on the hill for the Giants, Jerry Martin smacked a two-run single. Bruce Sutter preserved the victory with his 23rd save. [The Sporting News]
