The Padres extended their winning streak to eight games by sweeping a doubleheader from the Pirates, 5-2 and 4-1. John Curtis scattered five hits in going the distance in the opener as the Padres broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with two runs on a double by Dave Winfield and single by Willie Montaaez.

Bob Shirley and Rollie Fingers combined on a four-hitter in the second contest as the Padres registered three runs in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Bill Fahey, bases-loaded walk to Shirley and RBI single by Gene Richards. [The Sporting News]
