Mike Schmidt walked but was forced by Garry Maddox. Manny Trillo then doubled to left, putting runners at second and third. A single by Larry Bowa plated both runners and Bowa advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A single by Carlton then chased Bowa home. McGraw relieved Carlton with two runners aboard and two out in the ninth and closed out the game with one pitch, getting Tommy Herr to hit an easy bouncer to shortstop. [The Sporting News]
