Steve Stone gained his 18th victory of the season when the Orioles broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Yankees, 4-2. Winning their eighth straight, the Orioles pulled within 3½ games of the Yankees in the East Division.

Oscar Gamble homered for the Yankees' pair in the first inning and Al Bumbry hit a matching drive for the Orioles in the third. Breaking the tie in the eighth, Rich Dauer doubled and scored on a triple by Ken Singleton. John Lowenstein ran for Singleton and scored an insurance run on a single by Terry Crowley.
