The Pirates extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Ed Ott hit a homer in the second inning and drove in another run with an infield out in the seventh.

In between, the Pirates scored on sacrifice flies by Omar Moreno and Mike Easler. John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve combined on an eight-hitter for the Pirates, with the Phillies' run coming in the first inning on a pass to Lonnie Smith, single by Pete Rose and sacrifice fly by Mike Schmidt.
