A throwing error by Boston shortstop Rick Burleson allowed two runs to score in the eighth inning and give the Tigers an 8-7 victory over the Red Sox. The Tigers were behind, 7-6, when Mark Wagner opened the eighth with a single and was forced at second on Lou Whitaker's attempted sacrifice.

Ricky Peters beat out an infield hit and then both runners scored when Burleson threw wildly to first base after fielding Tom Brookens' grounder. Fred Lynn hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Sox ahead, 7-6, after Richie Hebner smacked a pinch-homer in the third to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. [The Sporting News]
