Ray Burris and Neil Allen combined on a five-hitter as the Mets downed the Pirates, 3-1. The game was scoreless after six innings, but Lee Mazzilli and Claudell Washington opened the Mets' seventh with singles and advanced on a sacrifice by Steve Henderson. Alex Trevino then lashed a two-run single.

The Mets picked up another marker in the ninth on an inside-the-park homer by Henderson. After Mike Easler opened the Pirates' ninth with a round-tripper, Allen came on to record his 21st save. [The Sporting News]
