Despite being outhit, 11-4, the Tigers defeated the Red Sox, 2-1. The Tigers scored both runs in the sixth inning when Steve Kemp singled and reached third when Boston second baseman Dave Stapleton made a wild throw on an attempted forceout on a grounder by John Wockenfuss. Steve Kemp scored on a grounder by Al Cowens and Wockenfuss registered on a single by Mark Wagner.

The Red Sox loaded the bases with none out in the eighth and ninth innings but failed to score. Tigers reliever Aurelio Lopez struck out the side with the sacks full in the eighth and then, in the ninth, Tony Perez lined into a double play and Carlton Fisk struck out. [The Sporting News]
