Saved by Rich Gossage, the Yankees edged the Orioles, 4-3, to open up a 3½-game lead in the East Division. Willie Randolph started the scoring for the Yankees, hitting a homer on loser Mike Flanagan's first pitch. Al Bumbry came back with a homer off Tommy John in the Orioles' half.

Reggie Jackson broke the tie with a two-run smash in the fourth and the Yankees added what proved to be the deciding run in the fifth when Bobby Brown beat out a bunt, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Randolph and scored on a single by Rick Cerone. Gossage relieved during the Orioles' rally in the seventh and pitched hitless relief over the last 2 1/3 innings. [The Sporting News]
