The Yankees' acquisition of Gaylord Perry from the Rangers paid immediate dividends when the veteran righthander, making his first appearance in a New York uniform, pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and gained credit for a 4-1 victory over the Orioles.

The Yankees, who pulled 4½ games ahead of the Orioles in the East Division race, scored a run in the first inning when Ruppert Jones singled, stole second and came home on a single by Bobby Murcer. Oscar Gamble added two runs with a homer after another single by Murcer in the fifth.
