Dividing a doubleheader, the Pirates took the opener, 5-1, and the Expos won the nightcap, 4-2. The Pirates scored three runs in the first inning of the lidlifter on an RBI single by Dave Parker and two-run homer by Lee Lacy and never were threatened as Rick Rhoden spaced seven hits in recording his first complete game of the season.

The second game was tied, 2-2, when Larry Parrish opened the Montreal ninth with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Chris Speier. After an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Gary Carter, Kent Tekulve relieved starter Don Robinson and yielded a pinch-single to Andre Dawson that loaded the bases.
