The Orioles moved within 2½ games of first place in the A.L. East by outlasting the Yankees, 6-5. After the Yanks' Oscar Gamble hit a two-run homer in the fourth, the Orioles registered three runs in the bottom of inning on an RBI single by Mark Belanger, run-scoring double by Al Bumbry and sacrifice fly by Rich Dauer.

They added three more in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Belanger, RBI single by Bumbry and infield out by Dauer. The Yanks registered three markers in the eighth but Tippy Martinez halted that rally and Tim Stoddard then hurled the ninth to record the save. [The Sporting News]
