A homer by Mario Guerrero in the eighth inning lifted the A's to a 2-1 triumph over the Red Sox, who lost although Dennis Eckersley pitched a two-hitter. Eckersley had a no-hitter through six innings, but Mitchell Page led off the seventh with a single.

Page then stole second, reached third when catcher Carlton Fisk's throw bounced away and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wayne Gross. Guerrero's homer was only his second of the season. [The Sporting News]
