A six-run fifth inning carried the Padres to a 7-5 triumph over the Phillies. ending the Padres' eight-game losing streak and the Phillies' six-game winning streak. Luis Salazar opened the outburst with a single and Dave Winfield followed with a home run.

After Willie Montanez singled, Craig Stimac was safe on an error by pitcher Nino Espinosa and Tim Flannery was walked intentionally to load the bases. Montanez scored when shortstop Larry Bowa fumbled a grounder by pinch-hitter Broderick Perkins.
