A single by Bruce Bochte in the fifth inning snapped a 4-4 tie as the Mariners downed the Yankees, 6-4. The Mariners added an insurance run in the seventh when Julio Cruz homered to greet Ron Guidry, who was making his first relief appearance of the season.

The Mariners benefited from two errors to tally four unearned runs in the first. Shane Rawley, who earned his 10th save, bailed himself out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth by striking out Eric Soderholm and Aurelio Rodriguez and retiring Bucky Dent on a line drive to center.
