An unearned run on a bad throw by center fielder Juan Beniquez in the ninth inning enabled the Red Sox to defeat the Mariners, 1-0. With two out, Glenn Hoffman singled and headed for third when Rick Burleson followed with a single to center. Beniquez attempted to cut him down, but his throw sailed into the stands.
