Joe Ferguson stroked a two-run single -- while Philadelphia was trying to walk him intentionally -- to highlight a four-run ninth inning that included a bench-clearing brawl as the Dodgers beat the Phillies, 8-4. The score was 4-4 when Davey Lopes began the L.A. ninth with a walk. Rudy Law then beat out a sacrifice hunt and Lopes reached third when catcher Bob Boone's throw hit Law and caromed down the right field line. Warren Brusstar replaced Dickie Noles for the Phils and was greeted by Dusty Baker's RBI double. Ron Cey followed with another run-scoring two-bagger and Tug McGraw took over for Brusstar.

Pinch-hitter Ferguson, with the count 1-0, reached out and slapped the ball to right for a single. The next batter, Bill Russell, was hit by a pitch and the Dodgers shortstop charged the mound.
