Dale Murphy hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Braves a 3-1 lead and Gary Matthews then hit for the circuit in the ninth to beat the Cardinals, 4-3. The defeat spoiled Red Schoendienst's debut as interim manager following Whitey Herzog's appointment to serve as general manager of the Cardinals. [The Sporting News]
