The Orioles drew within four games of New York in the A.L. East race by sweeping a doubleheader from the Tigers, 9-2 and 8-6. Al Bumbry led off the first game with a double and Lenn Sakata walked before a single by Ken Singleton produced the first run. Eddie Murray then unloaded a three-run homer.

Murray also singled home runs in the first and second innings of the nightcap as the Birds registered three tallies in each frame to take a 6-0 lead. [The Sporting News]
