Three errors by the Cardinals contributed to a four-run third inning that helped the Cubs to a 6-2 victory. Ivan DeJesus began Chicago's third by reaching first safely on an error by shortstop Tommy Herr. After a single by Lenny Randle, DeJesus scored on a double by Bill Buckner.

A single by Jim Tracy plated Randle and Buckner scored when catcher Ted Simmons dropped the throw to the plate after a grounder to third by Carlos Lezcano. The bases became loaded when pitcher Bob Forsch threw wildly to second on an attempted forceout and Tracy then scored on Tim Blackwell's forceout. [The Sporting News]
