Breaking up an overtime game, the Cubs erupted for five runs in the 14th inning and defeated the Mets, 10-5. The Cubs forced the game into extra innings when Dave Kingman homered with a man on base in the seventh to tie the score at 5-5.

In the 14th, a single by Bill Buckner, fielder's choice and intentional pass loaded the bases. Mike O'Berry capitalized on the opportunity with a two-run single and a third run scored when Mets center fielder Mookie Wilson let O'Berry's hit get past him.
