Don Sutton allowed only three hits in seven innings and Steve Howe gave up one more in the final two frames as the Dodgers' pitching pair combined to beat the Reds, 5-2. Dusty Baker drove in a run with a single in the third inning and Ron Cey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another tally.

The Dodgers then clinched the decision in the fourth when Mike Scioscia and Davey Lopes walked and Jay Johnstone drove them home with a double. Dodgers shortstop Bill Russell suffered a broken right index finger in the third inning when a pitch by Mike LaCoss hit his bat and glanced off against his hand. [The Sporting News]
