Ed Lynch gained his first major league victory and Roy Lee Jackson picked up his first save of the season when the Mets ended a 13-game losing streak by defeating the Cubs, 4-2. The Mets decided the outcome with three runs in the fourth inning.

Joel Youngblood led off with a double and scored on a single by Mike Jorgensen, who continued to second on a wild throw by Cubs center fielder Jesus Figueroa. After two out, a pass to Bill Almon and single by Lynch loaded the bases. Mookie Wilson then walked to force in a run and Wally Backman followed with a single to drive in another tally.
