Steve Carlton posted his 22nd victory, pitching the Phillies to a 2-1 decision, marking the ace lefthander's fifth triumph over the Cardinals this season. The Cards counted their run in the second inning on singles by George Hendrick and Tito Landrum around a wild pitch.

The Phillies came back with their pair against Bob Forsch in the sixth. Bob Boone led off with a double and stopped at third on a single by Carlton. Forsch then hit both Pete Rose and Bake McBride with pitches to force in the tying run. Mike Schmidt followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field and Carlton scored his own winning run after the catch. [The Sporting News]
