Andy Rincon made a successful major league debut by pitching a five-hitter in the Cardinals' 5-1 victory over the Cubs. The Redbirds broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning on an RBI double by George Hendrick, a balk and run-scoring singles by Rincon and Ken Oberkfell.
