Stout relief pitching by Rich Gossage enabled the Yankees to shade the Blue Jays, 5-4, and increase their lead in the East Division to six games over the Orioles. The big righthander came on in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out and retired Alfredo Griffin on a popup and struck out pinch-hitter Al Woods.

The Yanks scored three runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Oscar Gamble, Jim Spencer and Rick Cerone and registered a pair of markers in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer and run-scoring single by Gamble. [The Sporting News]
