Returning to the lineup after missing 25 games, Garry Templeton went 2-for-4 to boost his batting average to a league-leading .325 as the Cardinals subdued the Cubs, 8-5. The Redbirds loaded the bases in the first inning on singles by Ken Oberkfell and Templeton and a walk to Keith Hernandez, and then scored three runs as Cubs shortstop Ivan DeJesus erred on two successive plays. The lead was boosted to 5-0 in the fourth on singles by Tony Scott and Terry Kennedy, a sacrifice fly by Tommy Herr and double by Ken Oberkfell. [The Sporting News]
