Johnny Bench hit the 11th grand-slam homer of his career in the second inning during a seven-run outburst that propelled the Reds to a 10-7 victory over the Dodgers. After George Foster drove in the Reds' initial run with a single in the first inning, Ray Knight opened the second with a single and Ron Oester was safe on an error by Jerry Reuss.

Paul Moskau singled to score Knight. Dave Collins forced Moskau and stole second. After a pass to Ken Griffey, Dave Concepcion drove in two runs with a double. The Dodgers then passed Foster intentionally to load the bases in a bit of strategy that went sour when Bench followed with his grand slam. [The Sporting News]
