Taking advantage of two errors, the Giants scored four runs, three of them unearned, in the first inning and defeated the Astros, 4-3. Denny Walling and Craig Reynolds committed the Astros' costly errors.

The Giants had singles by Max Venable, Larry Herndon and Terry Whitfield, a sacrifice fly by Milt May and run-scoring grounder by Rennie Stennett. Two walks, a single by Terry Puhl and triple by Jose Cruz accounted for the Astros' runs in the third. [The Sporting News]
