A five-run rally in the top of the 11th inning carried the Reds to a 7-2 triumph and knocked the Dodgers out of first place in the West Division. Joe Nolan opened the Reds' 11th with a single and Ron Oester followed with a bunt single.

Tom Hume bunted and forced the runner at third, but the relay to first went wide for an error, putting runners on first and third. Pinch-hitter Johnny Bench was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ken Griffey followed with a two-run single. A single by Dave Concepcion plated Bench.
