The Phillies pulled to within one-half game of the first-place Expos in the East Division with a 7-3 decision over the Cubs. Greg Luzinski broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a homer and the Phillies added three runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Manny Trillo, run-scoring single by Pete Rose and sacrifice fly by Bake McBride.
