Paced by three hits by Bill Buckner, the Cubs shaded the Expos, 5-4. The Cubs took the lead in the first inning on a double by Buckner and single by Larry Biittner. Buckner doubled home a third-inning tally and Jim Tracy cracked a leadoff homer in the fourth.

A two-run single by Steve Dillard in the sixth inning followed singles by Buckner and Biittner and an intentional walk to Jerry Martin. The Expos kayoed Cubs ace Bruce Sutter in the ninth, but Dick Tidrow came on to get the final out with the tying run on base.
