Dennis Eckersley allowed only one hit and pitched the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays in a duel with Dave Stieb. John Mayberry homered for the Jays' hit in the fifth inning and Eckersley appeared in danger of losing until the Red Sox rallied for two runs in the eighth.

Glenn Hoffman singled, Rick Burleson walked and Dave Stapleton beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Garry Hancock lofted a sacrifice fly, tying the score, and Jim Rice followed with a single to put the Red Sox ahead. Rich Gedman batted in the extra run with a single in the ninth.
