Batting after an intentional pass to Bob Watson had loaded the bases, Eric Soderholm hit a grand-slam homer to power the Yankees to a 7-5 victory over the Tigers. With one out in the third inning, Willie Randolph walked, Bucky Dent doubled and after a walk to Watson, Soderholm hit the 100th homer of his major league career. Before the inning ended, the Yankees added two more runs.

Two RBIs by Ricky Peters and two by Steve Kemp helped the Tigers pull within one run at 6-5, but Randolph iced the Yankee victory with a homer in the ninth inning. [The Sporting News]
