The Expos beat Steve Carlton, 4-3, and pulled within one-half game of the leading Phillies in the East Division race. Mike Schmidt and Manny Trillo hit homers around one by Gary Carter to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead, but the Expos tied the score in the fourth on a double by Andre Dawson and single by Chris Speier.

Doubles by Speier and Jerry White sent the Expos ahead in the seventh and they added what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth when Dawson doubled to knock out Carlton and Larry Parrish singled off Warren Brusstar. [The Sporting News]
