. . . where the 1970s live forever!

With the help of Dick Tidrow, who pitched the last three innings, Randy Martz gained his first major league victory when the Cubs defeated the Pirates, 2-0, virtually killing off the last chance for the defending champions to repeat in the East Division race. The Pirates, in third place, were 5½ games behind the Phillies and five behind the Expos.

The Cubs collected only three hits off Jim Bibby, but one was a homer by Jim Tracy in the fifth inning. The other run counted in the same stanza on a single by Mike O'Berry, error by Pirates center fielder Oamr Moreno on a hit, and a sacrifice fly by Mick Kelleher. [The Sporting News]
