After Lance Parrish was hit by a pitch and Champ Summers walked to load the bases, Tom Brookens hit a slow grounder that first baseman Bob Watson misplayed, enabling Jones to score.

In other Tiger scoring, Parrish drilled a three-run homer in the sixth and Summers tied the game with a two-run round-tripper in the eighth off Yankee ace Rich Gossage.
