After scoring their first five runs on two homers, the Tigers counted the winning run on a 10th-inning error and edged the Yankees, 6-5. In the 10th, John Wockenfuss doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Lynn Jones. After Lance Parrish was hit by a pitch and Champ Summers walked to load the bases, Tom Brookens hit a slow grounder that first baseman Bob Watson misplayed, enabling Jones to score.

In other Tiger scoring, Parrish drilled a three-run homer in the sixth and Summers tied the game with a two-run round-tripper in the eighth off Yankee ace Rich Gossage. The homer was the first off Gossage since July 26 and he had yielded only one run in 19 appearances since August 8. [The Sporting News]
