A three-run pinch-homer by John Tamargo in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Expos to a 5-2 triumph over the Cardinals. With the game tied, 2-2, Gary Carter began Montreal's ninth by reaching first base safely on an error by Redbirds third baseman Ken Reitz.

After Warren Cromartie sacrificed Carter to second and Larry Parrish was walked intentionally, Carter reached third as Willie Montanez bounced into a fielder's choice. Tony Bernazard ran for Montanez and Tamargo then delivered his first round-tripper of the season.
